to Vincent and Chester,

I offer two minor corrections to Vincent's translation of the explanation in the "Italian Name Dictionary":

  -  "Calabria mer." stands for "Calabria meridionale" or "southern Calabria", that part of Calabria nearest to Sicily.

  -  "anelli" are rings, not sheep (which are "agnelli").  The hair is always curly, but less "earthy"

By the way: more difficult is the origin of the town name "Linguagrossa" ...
