AUSTRALIAN LAY CATHOLIC
APOLOGIST TO TOUR THE USA
|

|

|

|
|
FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER,
AUSTRALIA EXPORTS
CATHOLIC APOLOGETICS!
Australia
is a remarkable land, really great, and we're very proud
of it. Its unique beauty fascinates American visitors who
come here. It is also true that, in some places, they find
a great deserted wasteland, both climatically and spiritually.
But
there are great pockets of remarkable vitality, where you
can encounter a great many crocodiles, kangaroos, koala
bears and committed Catholics as well!
Over
the years, Australian Catholics have derived great benefit
from the many gifted Speakers coming from the United States,
who visit our country to share with us their Faith and enthusiasm
for the Catholic Church. Bishops, priests and religious,
as well as laymen and women, have visited this great Southern
Land of the Holy Spirit and shared their knowledge,
experience and wisdom in Conferences, Seminars and informal
talks.
We
Aussies have learned much from our American brethren and
have been inspired by your commitment to the Faith of the
Apostles. We are grateful to you for your contribution,
especially in the areas of Catholic Apologetics, towards
the strengthening of our faith and determination to reclaim
the ground lost to secularism in our great island-continent.
|
|
|
Now the time for Australia to reciprocate has come.
From
the Cathedral Parish Centre
of the Archdiocese of Perth, Western Australia,
St Gabriel Communications is proud to invite you,
our fellow Catholics in the United States,
to hear Australia's
first full-time lay Apologist:

Raymond de Souza
|
|
For three weeks in August and
September this year,
he will travel through various states in the U.S.
speaking in conferences and Catholic centres in your great country.
Raymond was not blessed with being
born in Australia - he couldn't help that, of course -
but he was wise enough to do the second best thing: he and his
family have settled here,
and made their home in our great Terra Australis.
Born neither a Yankee Doodle Dandy
nor a Crocodile Dundee, Raymond is Brazilian
by birth, Catholic by grace and Australian by choice. Not yet
a true blue Ocker,
but we reckon he's fair dinkum - let's see how many Americans
understand
our Australian lingo (pronounced 'Oh-strah-lian')!
He'll be speaking in Texas, Louisiana,
Massachusetts, Connecticut,
Indiana and Minnesota (see details below).
A two-day stopover in the island-state of Singapore on
his way to America will add
a touch of Asian spice to his tour.

Raymond and his wife Theresa host the first -
and only - Catholic radio talkback show in Western Australia -
"The Layman's Hour".
Born in the California Republic on the 4th of
July, Theresa adds her unique American touch as co-interviewer
with Raymond in this groundbreaking live radio broadcast.
|
| In
the last 20 years Raymond has given many hundreds of talks and seminars
on Catholic Apologetics and assisted in Religious Education
in parishes, schools and lay organisations in Australia, New
Zealand, Canada, the United States and South Africa.
A Language Consultant in Romance languages by profession (tutor
and translator), he now works as St Gabriel Communication's full-time
Researcher and Apologist. From the Cathedral Parish Centre in
Perth he and his team expand the Apologetics Faith
and Reason and the Re-Evangelising
the Baptised Educational programmes.
He chairs the Cathedral branch of the Catholic Order of the
Knights of the Southern Cross, is the Coordinator of Human
Life International in Perth and of the Lay Associate members
of the Australian Confraternity of Catholic Clergy in Western
Australia.

In his various fields of apostolate he is greatly assisted by
his devoted wife, Theresa. Their marriage has been blessed with
eight children
(see family photo in website).

His talks on Catholic Apologetics
in the States will address
issues such as:
The Eucharist - "This
is My Body"
in deed or in symbol only?" - "If
it looks like bread, tastes like bread, feels like bread
isn't it just plain bread'?" The
biblical foundations of Jesus' Real Presence of Jesus in the Eucharist
under the spotlight of logic.
The Papacy
- "Who is the Rock? Peter
or Jesus?"
- "Isn't Jesus our only rock of salvation? Why have a Pope
at al, then?" - Investigating
the biblical foundations of the Papacy in the light of the Hebrew
and Christian tradition.
The Rosary - "Is
the Rosary just 'vain repetitions'?" - "Hasn't Jesus
condemned the pagan practice of vain repetitions in prayer? Why
pray the rosary, then?" - Unveiling
the truth about repetitive prayer in the context of the Mind of
Christ in both the Old and New Testaments.
The Mother of
God - "Mary, the Ark
of the New Covenant" - Discovering
the biblical figures of the Marian dogmas of Divine Maternity,
Perpetual Virginity, Immaculate Conception and Assumption in the
mysterious beauty of the Ark of the Old Covenant.
The Foundations
of Morality - "What is
'Good'? What is 'Evil'? And WHO decides?" Investigating
the roles of the State, Society and the Individual to establish
the foundations of morality in the light of logic and Natural
Law.
The Enemy Number
One - "The Devil: a person
or a force?" - The
growth of new age and satanism in the context of the crisis in
the Church, and the exorcistic role of St Michael and the Angelic
Hosts in this spiritual combat.
These are only a few samples
of his 50-plus Apologetics Talks repertoire

Don Sproxton in the Layman's Hour.

Australia has sided with America in the war against
terrorism - we must join our forces to combat this great evil
that threaten us.
Yet there are other evils of a spiritual
nature, even greater ones, that threaten us as well, such as,
moral decadence in both laity and clergy, doctrinal dissent, religious
ignorance, false teaching in schools, secularism, lukewarmness,
etc., etc.
Australian and American Catholics must also work
side by side to combat such great spiritual evils and protect
our children's the future, both in this life and in the hereafter.
We are all citizens of God's Kingdom on earth - the Church Militant
- en route to its full blossoming in the Church triumphant.

|
In his address to the bishops
of Japan, Pope John Paul II
referred to three evils affecting churchgoing Catholics today:
mediocrity, minimalist ethic and
shallow religiosity.
In
his address to the Bishops of the Antilles, he gave the solution:
A New Apologetics!

"What the Church needs [is] a
new apologetics
for the people, that they can understand
what the Church teaches. Especially so
in a world where people are continuously subjected
to the cultural and ideological pressure of the media
and the aggressively anti-Catholic attitude of many sects."
(Address
to the Bishops of the Antilles, in Echo from Africa and
Other Continents, July 2002).

In view of everything that has
been said here, the picture of our days
is very clear: We are in the supreme movements of a fight that
we would call mortal if one of the contenders were not immortal
the Catholic Church. As children of the Church and fighters
in Her battles, it is natural for us filially to consecrate this
initiative to Our Lady.
The Immaculate Virgin is She who has crushed the head of the serpent.
The universal and omnipotent mediation of the Mother of God
is the greatest reason for our hope, and, at Fatima, She has already
given us the certitude of victory, when She announced that in
the end,
"My Immaculate Heart will triumph!"
Plinio Correa de Oliveira

|
 |
"I admire your energy and commitment to
the media outreach
that you have initiated. May God
continue to bless your work and may
the seeds you sow produce a hundredfold".
Most Reverend Barry Hickey, Archbishop of Perth
to Raymond de Souza, on "The Layman's Hour" broadcast.
|
|
|
"I am happy to certify
his orthodoxy and fidelity to the Magisterium
of the Church. A gifted person in the field of Catholic Apologetics
and is doing great work here in the Archdiocese of Perth."
Monsignor Thomas McDonald, Dean of the Perth
Cathedral.
|
 |
"Raymond is part of a revival of that
classical tradition of defending
and explaining the faith, that began with St Justin Martyr.
His concentration on essentials, combined with a challenging style,
make for a rational call to faith
which speaks to the needs
of young people in our times."
Monsignor Peter Elliott, Episcopal Vicar
for Catholic Education, Archdiocese of Melbourne.
|
 |
"His talks were most impressive. He spoke
on the Eucharist, and very convincingly demonstrated the Traditional
Faith of the Catholic Church.
His talk was also most entertaining and inspiring. I described
to the Bishop that his talk was "masterly". He covered
all the major aspects
of the Doctrine of the Church in a clear, understandable, yet
erudite delivery
that was always focused on the Doctrine but still very absorbing
and
entertaining."
Rev. Fr. Carl Ashton, Parish Priest
Sacred Heart parish, Diocese of Parramatta (Sydney)
|
 |
"His
work with the Australian Confraternity of Catholic Clergy and with
St Gabriel Communications is praiseworthy indeed and of great merit
as he promotes, teaches and catechizes the Roman Catholic Faith.
A man of upright and sound character. I have no hesitation in recommending
him and the work of St Gabriel Communications."
Fr. Michael Rowe, West Australian Councillor
for the Australian Confraternity of Catholic Clergy
